In Activities, History

Along with a rich history comes legends and lore passed down for generations until they become fanciful stories we tell our children. Belize and the Caribbean in general is home to many of these stories. From sunken treasure and ghost ships to sea monsters and the green flash, Caribbean folklore is some of the most celebrated in the world.

There’s more than just mermaids to Belizean lore. One classic Belizean legend is that of the Sisimoto, a tall monster covered in hair resembling a Yeti or Bigfoot. The Sisimoto lives in caves and is said to roam the river banks at dusk.

When you visit the Crystal Caves in Belize, make sure you watch out for the Sisimoto. You never know where he could be hiding!
