“There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountaintop of our desires.”
“Freedom consists not in doing what we like, but in having the right to do what we ought.”
Pope John Paul II
On this day in 1981 the Belize Act 1981 was passed in the United Kingdom, for the nation of Belize, formerly British Honduras, to gain full independence and become a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. Until this point British Honduras was a self-governed British colony, but now, Belize was independent as of September 21, 1981.
Belize became independent. Free.
Our country has a rich and storied history, one worth learning so we never forget who we are, where we came from, or what it took to get us here.
Happy 35th birthday, Belize! You look beautiful today.
